NRL files in Sharepoint Document Libraries

We are having a problem when users put Worksite NRL files into Sharepoint Document Libraries. About 50% of the time the NRL links open fine, but the rest of the time Internet Explorer will just open the link as a text file and display the content of the NRL.

Our Windows Explorer file associations are set up fine, and it is an intermittent problem, even on the same machine. In fact if the NRL file fails to open, you can often press Back, click on it again and it will open fine.

Has anyone else seen this?

When IE opens as text file, what is the extension ? Do you always open from the document library or from search results?

The extension is still .nrl.

These are generally being opened straight from Document Libraries, and only occasionally from Search Results.

Does anybody know how to easily create NRLs or URLs into Sharepoint?
I'd to be able to drag-drop from FileSite into a web page control.
