TeamSite comparison across branches

This is the config (we pass the areas to deploy):

When area and previousArea are 2 editions in the same branch, the deployment works as expected. When the the 2 editions come from different branches, then no diff appears to be done, or at least all files are considered different. Is there something I'm missing?

never mind. i just found from a senior developer that they never got it to work before so we resorted to doing a manual iwdiffdir to find the differences.
