Is inter component communication possible between LiveSite 2.2.1 components?

What I want to acheve is something like this:When a user clicks on a link or enter some value in one component, another should get the value selected/entered by the user and function accordingly. Some thing like a typical chat program.I come from a WebSphere portal background, I would call it some thing similar to inter-portlet communication.

What is the theId in yourcode refering to???Can you please give me an example of how to use a named ID from the target component in the source component?That would be really helpful!!!
