DCR's XML structure reversed

I am currently creating Forms (Templates) on a TS 6.5 SP2 (Windows) environment.

The DCRs are saved as XML. When I opened some of the DCRs I noticed that their structure didn't comply with the structure defined in the DCT. Instead the XML structure seems to be the reverse of the DCT structure.
Of course this would have significant impact when it comes to accessing the DCR elements for HTML output later on in the process chain.

Did I miss any important settings? Did anyone experience this behaviour and can let me know how to fix it? Or could this be because I didn't specify a DTD in the DCT definition?

I've noticed myself that the tags in my DCRs aren't saved in the same order as the are collected on the DCT.

The tags are still nested properly and the information displays fine in the TPLs.

If you don't specify a DTD - the order is completely arbitrary. There have been reports (I don't recall what versions of TS) that even with the DTD the order is arbitrary.
Unless you are intending to process the DCR's XML directly by some utility that cares about the ordering - it really doesn't matter - because all the XPATHs are still valid regardless of the ordering of the elements.

We don't use the TPL functionality at all, so it'd make our life a little bit more difficult to work with the "unstructured" XML.

The trick is to put the DTD not in any folder but in your /iw-home/httpd/iw folder (or any of its subfolders) and reference it via HTTP.
So the reference in your DCT would look something like this:

<data-capture-requirements dcr-validation="reject-invalid" dtd-system-identifier="http://localhost/iw/custom_dtd/content__master.dtd" name="data-capture-requirements">

The result is an XML that reflects my DCT's structure perfectly. This solution was sent to me by IW support who sent along a link to the KB article 51374:
