iwmigrate to a new platform?

We have recently invested in new server hardware and are currently in the process of moving our Teamsite installation. I was always led to believe that IW had a tool for such a task iwmigrate.exe. Before using iwmigrate to move the backing store from our old windows server to the shiney new one i thought that I'd check the docs and forums and support site both to see how this was done.
KB Article #50601 suggests that on the original server you map up the iw-store of the new server and use that as the location for the iwmigrate command. But discussions on a forum thread suggested that this is unlikely to work.
Anyone out there done this succesfully? Otherwise I guess I'll just try it.
BTW I wish to migrate from 6.7.1 on Windows2000 to 6.7.1 on Windows2003.

If you set up all the mapped drives and command line arguments correctly - and make sure you have editions on all your branches that you want to migrate from the old server - iwmigrate should work just fine.

What iwmigrate will *not* do is migrate a backing store from Windows to Unix or vice-versa

Since you are just moving across windows versions, why can't you just transfer the iw-store directory.

We did exactly this when moving from TS 6.1 SP2 on Solaris, to 6.7.1 on Linux. Everything remains as it was on 6.1.

The key is to move the content over before the 6.7.1 install.

How do we restore the file permissions when migrating from Solaris to Linux ?

BTW I wish to migrate from 6.7.1 on Windows2000 to 6.7.1 on Windows2003.

Does the file permissions and access rights are affected by the SP's which we install on Windows 2003 and TS 6.7.1 ?

Thanks for the help. The migration went fine with the mapped drives etc. One final question though. Is there anyway of preventing the Workareas being renamed to temp_workarea? thanks, Nick

I too had the same problem, workareas were renamed as temp_workarea in our migration too, any idea why does this happen

Those are not renamed workareas!
Those temp_workarea's are used by the migrate process to maintain state in which to replay all the submit events. If you are doing a migration in incremental steps (i.e. initial migration done while work continues on the original server, incremental migration(s) done when ready to cut over to the new server) - you need to leave the temp_workarea's exactly as they were in order for the incremental migration to work.

Also - if you're going to do any testing of the new system between migration runs - you need to maintain a clean snapshot of the backing store as it exists after the previous migration, so you can restore it to that state before attempting the next migration. You cannot migrate on top of a modified target store.

Once you're migration is 100% complete (no future migrations to occur) - then you can remove the temp_workarea's and create the workareas you want.

If you want to migrate the workareas from the old system - that's something completely different - and you might want to look up the iwcpwa CLT - or (as I did on my current project) role your own solution for migrating workareas. iwmigrate does not do this for you.
