Search blues

Setting: TS 6.5 SP2 along with Search 1.0.0.0.41237a (without any service packs) on Solaris 8. TS Event Subsystem disabled.

We should uninstall TS SP2, install Search SP2 and reinstall TS SP2, right? But that doesn't seem to be in the cards at the moment.

Meanwhile, I'm having 2 problems:

1. Every few hours the Index and Search servers are dying on me. I see the following in "iw.tsindex.log":

But some search-agent processes remain.

What to do about this sudden-death syndrome?

2. From a ContenCenter interface, I'm unable to find any files in a certain branch. I'm able to find files in the same branch using the "iwsrchquery" command-line tool. I added the "Any" language in iw-home/httpd/webapps/content_center/WEB-INF/conf/search/search.xml and enabled debugging in httpd/webapps/content_center/WEB-INF/conf/search/log4j.xml. The iwui/search.log shows what's below.

What does "num fields: 4" mean?

Incidentally, searching another branch from CC does return results.

Uh, why wouldn't it? (We have set iw.index.events.enable=false.)

As I had mentioned, I'm able to search for files in a particular branch from the command-line, but not from either ContentCenter interface. Furthermore, I'm able to search for files in another branch via CC.

Wonder if I'm running into a problem with permissions. A Webcast presentation mentioned that "Search Results filtered by User Permission." Does that mean that files that a user can't edit are omitted? But I think I have all the access I'd need. I'm even logging in as Master.

I iwndxpurgebr and iwnxdaddbr, but not progress.

Incidentally, I added the following to httpd/webapps/content_center/WEB-INF/conf/ccpro/log4j.xml, but nothing is being written to iwui/ccpro.log:

By the by, sysinfo.log in the index directory for the troublesome branch shows "Vdb Access" errors. But so does the sysinfo.log for the good branch.

The search works without the event subsystem with the above said property set to false. One looses the capability of the file modification upate reflected in the search.

Can u please verify that the user running CLT result is same as the one from the content center. The search results are filtered based on the UI permissions. Set the logger to DEBUG in the search.properties and u can see the results returned from the query in the search log file. The problem might have been due to corrupted indexes from the upgrades so u can try to purge and reindex the branch from the CLT.

Thanks for your input! I'm getting better results now. Search wasn't working for me because of language-related peculiarities, which were aggravated by the fact that we don't have any service packs installed for Search 1.0 whereas we have service pack 2 plus a patch installed for TeamSite 6.5.

I had added an "Any" ("un") language selection to the Advanced Search screen, but that wasn't helping. I ended up setting the Any language element in search.xml as follows:

I set the id to "*" first, but I ran into an error with that. Mercifully, an empty language id did the trick.

I wasn't having problems via the iwsrchquery tool because I wasn't specifying any language with it!
