Is there a limit that a workflow can run?

ie, there is a hard-coded limit of 1000 transitions, w/o hitting that limit, is there a time limit?

Let say, will workflow live for a couple of years?

I have seen hung workflows last that long (when the external task did not complete and whoever wrote the WF did not have a broken task timeout)

I don't believe there is a technical time-limit on workflows - but there is a practical time-limit - workflows that sit around for a long time add up and at some point (I don't remember what the number is) the number of workflows / tasks defined in the workflow store will start to cause performance degradation.

Then there's the theoretical issue - why would you want a workflow to sit around for a year or more?

Can we limit the workflow to a maximum number of tasks/transitions or a time limit manually in our code ?

yes you can limit the number of transitions by maintaining the state in wf variables.

Do you know something specific about the workflow(s) in question here that the rest of us don't know?

I presume the transitions are done to loop through the workflow process multiple times - so I don't see how using job variables is going to fix this.

Frankly, I still don't understand why one would have a workflow transition that many times - I'd be hard pressed to think of a good reason for a workflow to transition 100 times which is only 1/10th of the allowed number.
