Import of Email

I need to do a mass import of emails via the backend, could you please explain to me how the process works, what DB tables I need to populate with the Metadata etc.

You should use the WOM to do it. It would be really complicated to do it straight into the DB and file server, not to mention it would be a non supported approach.
