If all the definations of data types are kept in datacapture.cfg, why do we need the DTD file. The study material says its optional, but then when is it used? Is it for defining the xml part?Then why is it optional?
Is there a compatibility issue of the DTD with the datacapture.cfg.

The purpose of a DTD is to define the legal building blocks of an XML document. It defines the document structure with a list of legal elements.YOu can do away with a dtd for an XML but then is it an issue if you are providing the xml to be used by other user who are not aware what type of values they are expected to be putting in that xml.

XML has to be well-formed as well as valid. DTDs are for checking of validness of the DCR (XML). If you put the DTD declaration, it would validate your DCR against the same. If not, then only the well-formedness would be checked.
