MPEG-2 video not recognized on import
Bill Klish
I took a sample capture of video from a tv tuner card and attempted to insert the MPEG-2 file into the repository. It didn't detect anything with the file.
I have installed the following components on the server (installers from the program files\mediabin server folder)
- DirectX
- Windows Media Player (said I have a more recent version and skipped it)
- Quick Time
Is mpeg-2 not supported? I tried switching the video preview profile as well to the mpeg-4 one, but that didn't change anything either.
Is this format not the right one to use for this?

Am I missing the boat here? Can someone tell me what is wrong with this source video, or is source video just not supported?

Bill,
You should look at the following:

In short, MediaBin supports multimedia via Microsoft's DirectShow framework. This works by installable modules (codecs) registered with the machine. It is a general rule of thumb that if Windows Media Player can stream the video, MediaBin should be able to preview it. However "rule of thumb" means just that; there are exceptions. Microsoft supports various levels of compliance and some codecs may give enough functionality to stream a video and still not give all the functionality we need to produce previews (e.g., the ability to tell the codec to seek to an arbitrary location, as we preview a scattered subset of frames).
The solution is to obtain a "DirectShow filter" from a third party that once registered essentially makes DirectShow "smmarter" (note this is done completely outside MediaBin). Support will be able to help you choose a codec for this purpose.
Cheers,
Lyman Hurd
