Tooltips for Menu Items

I have a requirement to show 'tool tips' for the menu items on the Advanced Search Page ( and any other page ) but w:menuitem tag has no attribute for tool tips.
Is there a simple way to do this consistently across the application.
The tooltips need not be locale specific.
