puplating data in a dct using formapi ?

hi everyone

i have this scenro... i need to create a dct that would have a dropdown menu of many products. so if i choose product_1 then i will only get the replicants that corrpesonds to that product. (this is dont though and it was was not hard to do). but now this is what i am trying to do next.

i want the data in those replicants to be puplated using FORMAPI from another javascript file or xml file. and also have the user to be able to modify them if he/she wants after openning the dct.

so what puzzles me here is how to read from js file correctly. i wrote this code but it is not working

{
var ProductPrices = new Array();

ProductPrices["3534"] = new Option("$200|product desciption_1|$540",false,false);
ProductPrices["3538"] = new Option("$2125|product desciption_2|$540",false,false);

If I understand correctly you want to populate data based on the drop down selection...

If this is the case why you want to read anything from XML or JS... can't you hardcode these data in your DCT itself.. It will be editable also...

Create the second replicant as empty and populate values in it based on first selection. You can use formAPI to add values dynamically to the second selection based on first.

thanks guys for replying back. here is the what i am trying to do. i want to read certain values from another javascript file in my area and then take those data and puplate it in my DCT fields.

this is the requiremnts . if it was my choice i would just let the user add them him self .

i need to know how can i read from a javascript file in my area using formapi. what path should i be using. formapi uses IWDatacapture object to read from another dct but if again can i use this object to read from JS file ???? and if i could what should be the path to that file in my work area

example

IWDatacapture.getItem("...?????/Root/Main/Replicants").setOptions(productPrices);

You can certainly and easily populate fields in a DCR with formapi.

Something like:


 var Title = "Something from somewhere else";
 IWDatacapture.getItem("/Root/Title").setValue(Title);

Reading that from a file on the TS server is a little more complex as JS is client side so it cannot open a file on the TS server. For that you need to write a callserver function. JS that kicks off a perl script (in iwhome/httpd/iw-bin) that in turn has JS embedded to call a function in your original formapi that will do the setValue call.

It is certainly not trivial, but many people do that.

thanks nipper , the file i am trying to read from is in my workarea. i already used a callserver but i still cant get any data from that file.

this is usually the formula when using callserver right??

IWDatacapture.callServer("http://"+server+"/..../somefile/somewhere/", params);
}

but the file i am reading from is in my workarea??? what is the right path should i be using here. and can i use callserver to get data from a file in my workarea???

Take it one step at a time. First just pass your WA as a parameter to the callserver. Something like:


 var params = new Object();
 params.dcrPath = workarea_name;
 params.callBack = "setValues";
 URL= "http://" + server + ":80" + "/iw-bin/readthefile.ipl";
 IWDatacapture.callServer(URL, params, false);

Get that working, likely with some debug statements in the ipl to a file. Then see if the callback function setValues is started.

You do not need callSever to use JS File (XML will be a different story!). You can incorporate your JS File(s) into DCT using <script> tag(s)[html]

[/html] and then use something like the following to populate your item:

IWDatacapture.getItem("/Root/Title").setValue(your_variable); or
IWDatacapture.getItem("/Root/Title").setValue(your_function());

Good point. I skipped over the fact that this is in a separate JS file, I assume it was a data file somewhere.
