insert a batch of files into mediabin

Joseph_goh

Is there any better tool or scripts to insert a batch of files into mediabin besides using the hot folders?
My users feedback it is very tedious and time-consuming to insert file by file.

If you can provide some details, perhaps we could make some suggestions.
Are you using other client applications besides Hot Folders? The Native Windows and Mac clients are the most convenient to use in this regard because they support drag and drop of multiple assets on insertion. When using the web client, you can create a zip or Stuffit archive of files and insert the archive. If it contains a folder hierarchy, that hierarchy will be replicated in MediaBin on insertion.
With version 4.6, you have some additional options if you choose to enable applets for file transfer in the MediaBin web client. You can insert folders without archiving them. However, if you need to preserve Finder and Resource information for Macintosh files, you still must first create a Stuffit archive or macbinary encode the files.

You can write a script fairly easily that runs as a batch job over a network share folder where users can dump assets. The script then ingests them into MB.

I am not sure what the reason is for you not to use HotFolders. If you think it is a maintenance nightmare to do that then you can use the other option that I have suggested and code all your logic in the script.

Sorry to ask a potentially silly question, but is there a reaosn why a drag and drop onto the Windows Native Client would not work?

Thanks,

Thank you for your replies.
Currently, my users access the Mediabin server through the intranet access.
If they want to insert a file, they will click on the "Add' - "Asset from File" function and then click on the "Browse" button to locate the file to insert.
When they click on the "Browse" button, it does not allow to select multiple files to insert.

I have the following questions.

To Mediabin MTS,
When you say the Native Windows Client can do drag and drop multiple files, are you referring to the Mediabin client? Does it mean that the mediabin web client application must install into all the users' computers?

To Msrinivas,
Can you please provide the scripts?

Thank you very much for your help.

I was a bit confused by your question because you ask if the MediaBin WEB client had to be installed on each user's PC. I'm guessing this was just a typeo and you really were asking if you would be required to install the MediaBin Native Windows client on each PC. Also, to clarify, the product called the MediaBin Client is also referred to as the MediaBin Native Windows client because it has been written to run on Windows only (written in C++ using Microsoft Foundation Classes).
The MediaBin Native Windows client is not required to be copied to each user's PC. Since your users are within your intranet, you can install the Native Client on a single server in a folder that's exposed as a Windows UNC share. Your users must have at least READ access to the share. Your users can then create a desktop shortcut to the path of the exe. The shortcut's working directory must be set to the share where the Native Windows client is installed. The working directory is labeled "start in" from the Windows shortcut properties form. The Native Client saves preferences to the user's local registry, so it never creates files in the working directory.

Some of our customers use the Native Client among their intranet users and the WEB client for external users or when their users want to access MediaBin from the internet.

Hi Mediabin_MTS,

Thanks for reply.

I have found that the mediabin client allows multiple files insertion.
But I have a problem creating the shortcut.
My mediabin client application is installed in the D drive of a server and that application folder is shared for all users.
I created a shortcut in another computer to path to that exe application file and when I clicked on it, it gives error. The error says some of the dll files can't be found.
Any idea what is wrong?

Thanks.

Your MB client can be on any machine. It is just a client. You dont have to point to the exe location on the server. Get the client from support site and install it on your machine and use it.

Joseph,

I believe you've missed a step. You must set the "start from" directory to be the common directory. This is also known as the "working directory" for an application. This directory will be searched first for dlls.
I've you've done this step, then some Microsoft dlls required by the app are not found. Locate them on the server and make copies of them in the same folder where you installed the Windows Native client.

Joseph_goh

Hi Mediabin_MTS,

I have copied those microsoft dlls into the working directory and it is working ok now.

Is there a task that can be created to upload a batch of files into mediabin bin and this task can be added in the "insertion tasks" function resided in the mediabin web client?
All my users access the mediabin web client through intranet.
If they want to insert a file, they will click on the "Add' - "Asset from File" function and then click on the "Browse" button to locate the file to insert with the default insertion task "Insert Unmodified - ...".
It would be good if there is such a task to add into the insertion task.

Thank you very much for your help.

There is no task that can be created to do this. However, it sounds like your users are still using the web client. Given that you would like them to improve productivity, they should probably switch to using the MediaBin Windows Native client. The only non-administrative function that is not supported by the native client is video. With the Windows Native client, a user can drag and drop file(s) and folder(s) from Microsoft's File Explorer to the MediaBin Native client. Also, the MediaBin Windows Native client is "event driven" so additions, deletions, and modifications of assets in folders is reflected on all users screens in nearly real time. With the web client, the user must refresh the page to see the latest state of assets in a folder.

They can upload a zip file through the Web client and it will uncompress all files after insertion.
