Time Reduction while Transfering files to receiver using compression

Hi In our TS we use the OD 6.1 . We use a Fan Out Deployment to transfer the files from the base server to the 3 receivers .

Now we have introduced compression parameter in our transfer rules in our Deployment configuration file.

Does any one have any Statistics to how much Time Reduction would be achieved using this and by how much the CPU Utlization should Increase.

Most of our assets are in the range of (500KB to 5 MB).

I don't have any specifics - but consider the amount of time it takes to perform the compression - and decompression - vs. the size of the file(s) being transferred.

If you have a lot of 5Mb files that compress well (some large files don't compress that much, some even seem to get larger) you will probably see some reduction in the overall deployment time.

If you have a lot of 5 Kb files - chances are you will be losing time for the compression / decompression over the time it would have taken to just transfer the files without compression.

The overall time for deployment depends on a number of factors:

So the size of the files being deployed has to be included along with all the other factors to determine whether you'll see any appreciable time savings by using compression.

Out TS Server CPU Util is on average of 2-3 % Only. So Cpu utilization is not a Problem for us.

Today i tried out some testing after putting the compression .

I found out that certain files such as (Jpegs) and all dont compress too much . But flash files do compress too much. CPU Utilization was the same . There was no significant changes in that.

Moreover I felt that transfer of files (Flash ) was faster than the previous method.

Glad to have helped. In cases like this though, empirical evidence through testing in your actual environment is really the only way to figure out the effect of different settings.

It takes some time to set up the different tests - but if you do so, make sure to document what you did and what the results were so that further on down the line you'll have a usable knowledge base to work from.

Sharing those results here is certainly nice, but each environment is likely to be different so the results you see may not be exactly what someone else will see - but having a sense of the variables involved and their likely effect on the overall performance is always useful.
