Using Perl in a datacapture.cfg

I have a select that has the years from 2006 thru 2016 in a drop down. The user would like the current year be the selected year in the drop down. How do I code to capture the current year in the datacatpture.cfg file?

That is pretty easy.

use an inline command that will run a perl script to generate the XML needed to build the command you need.

your DCT will have this


<inline command="d:/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl.exe d://iw-home/custom/inline/datacapture/inline.ipl" />

And that script will output the XML needed to make the scrolling list, surrounded by substitution tags.

FYI, you can also do this in JS and FormAPI if you prefer.

Write a perl script that with this, adding the code to set the variable $select to the XML needed to generate any item (worry about the current year after you have the inline working).

This should be more than enough to get started, try something, show what you have written and someone will help. Of course I could write this in 5 minutes but then you learn nothing

Please elaborate about your requirement in detail.

However, to answer the queries... the code would look like as nipper has stated and thats too enclosed within selecte tag.

Local time needs a client-side scripting ... which can be embeded within CGI and as far as building XML is concerned... nipper has stated that the output would be option tag and value combination wrapped within substitution tag.

to add to nipper, your code in DCT will still be some HTML (with select tags, where the current year will have the selected attribute)

Note: You can use Perl within an inline script for this - or you can use JavaScript / FormAPI directly within the DCT or sourced from a separate file (preferable IMO).

Similar to Nipper's suggestion of showing us what you know how to do in Perl - I'd suggest that if you want to go the JavaScript method - you show us what you know in JavaScript if you want to go that route (feel free to use other online resources like w3school)
