Ghosting drives ? what fo you need ?

OK, so my wife's laptop disk was making a funny noise and died shortly after. Now my laptop is behaving the same. I am planning to take it to a place to see if they can ghost it before it dies. the cost is about $200 plus the cost of the drive. What do I need to do this myself & roughly how much would I expect to spend ? If I can outfit myself to do it for $300 or $400 then I would.

Is Ghost still the best way to do it ?

You should get a ghosting program from Norton or Symantec (for $100 bucks or get an illegal version for free).... and burn the generated image on a CD (at a cost of 10 cents)... put in a new hard drive and finally copy back the image containing your illegal mp3s and **** onto your new hard drive (priceless).

My laptop is an HP without an adapter for a 2nd drive. If I pick up ghost, will that boot up from a CD and let me remove the CD to put another in with an image ?

I have a very old copy (boots from a DOS floppy) but it will not handle disks this large, I think 20GB was the max. Of course the old thinkpad (where I initially used Ghost) I have also handles 2 disk drives. :-(

I suggest not to boot up from CD drive, try to load that from some external drive using USB.

You could also buy an external usb drive (one that uses 3.5 inch hard drives), then ghost your machine to that drive. You can take the hard drive out of it's external enclosure and replace your laptop drive with the new drive from the enclosure. All this depends on your comfort level with hardware replacement.

Ghost 8.x (2003) and newer support external USB drives for creating images.
