Edition - Need to make file writable
Gregg Faus
Knowing that editions are only read-only copies of a website, is it possible to make certain files writable so that the website can function properly? I'm letting clients preview their website by have them view an edition. But when I have applications that need to write to text or XML files I cannot have clients seeing write errors. Basically the file needs to be writable in order for the app to work properly (e.g. saving data to xml)
So, it is possible to make an edition file (even staging) writable? I've tried using windows explorer to uncheck the read-only attribute and even looked at CLT's. Anyone have a suggestion or am I out of luck?
System: Win2k/TS5.01 sp2
Thanks.

There's no way to make a file in any EDITION or STAGING directory writeable -- they're locked down on the Filesystem by Interwoven. Keep in mind that when you look at a file through the Interwoven GUI, you are actually seeing an illusion. Those files aren't actually files. . . they're controlled conglomerations of a bunch of different content files and meta data files stored in Interwoven's backing store.
What application are you trying to use that needs to write to an EDITION? Why can't you use a WORKAREA set up for that purpose?

I figured there was no way around this so I created a workarea called "preview". That way I can remove the context editor using a regular expression with any workarea named "preview".
Editions work in most cases, but not those were XML files need to be written to.
