DAS Question

In a workflow is there a way for the author who submitted workflow to receive an email if a DAS based deployment has failed? This is more question on DAS, how would one say with out looking into logfiles that DAS had failed. Can we incorporate a task in the workflow where we can say check this flag and see if DAS deploymnet has failed??

If you are invoking the data deploy from an externaltask script you can capture the OD return code to send a email to the author.

Yes sir, i had that idea but it is only possible in "Standalone" Deployments where invoke the deployment from external task. But in DAS you will not invoke anything in the external task, cuz DAS is triggered always.

It was not clear why you mentioned Workflow in your original post that why I said it can be done in the externaltask script.

Did you try using the DNR script to send the email to the author?

Yes i can certainly use DNR to send email out, but the point here is how would one determine if DAS based deployment failed? I know it when i look into log files or sql tables..

My question is how would one determine that DAS has failed and system needs to send an email out?

DNR script can be triggered on "failure" so you can use this to send the email notification.

I'm just guessing here - because I haven't tried to use DAS in years - but doesn't DAS require the event subsystem to be running? If so - perhaps there's an event posted when DAS completes ? and perhaps a distinct event posted for success and failure ? If so - you should be able to use an iwat trigger script to fire based on that event.

Alternatively - if you know where the DAS logs are, you could probably write your own monitoring script that checked for new logs and looked for completion statements / error statements and such and sent email regarding them -- not ideal, but it should work.

(I do not believe that DNRs play any role in DAS deployments - that's only for OD and OD/DD synchronized deployments)

Yes adam you are right, but i am confused here, the basic files which are generated when DAS passed or failed are

TeamsiteEvents.0
TeamsiteEvents.1
TeamSiteClientEvents.0

I am assuming that TeamsiteEvents.0 is created when DAS is successful
and TeamsiteEvents.1 is created when DAS fails. But then thing here is, they are overwritten always, it not like it is created everytime. And both these files are binaries, so it makes it hard to read out of this file. So please let me know if i am right or wrong?

I think you're kind of in the middle of being right and wrong - the files are binary which means you need a program to read them (not sure exactly what format they're in - never bothered to look at them myself). Whether the information is keyed to the .0 and .1 extensions is more questionable - but it's possible.
If you cannot find information about how to access the information in those files in the manuals or by searching both this site and the support site - I strongly recommend you open a case with IWOV Support ... and then please post the information here for the next person who needs to do something similar.

Thanks adam, i finaly opened a case with support after so much of pressure from top. And support do agree with me, there is no way to tell if DAS failed or succeeded with out looking into logfiles and there is nothing to determine that in the workflow.

So they said they would put a future request on this.

Thats the reason most companies prefer standalone.

And IWOV wonders why few people use DAS. Error checking is hard enough with DD in a workflow.

You *may* want to use a call server on the save event to kick off DD. Depending on how long the DD takes, this may be workable.

I did this in a previous (TS 552, OD 5.6) implementation, DD was complex and took about 30 seconds to run, I had to block the screen so it did not get terminated.

Certainly is far from a good solution, but if your DD takes only a couple seconds, you may be able to do it easily.

Yes Andy, but my DAS takes longer too. I have contacted Interwoven for this and i erquested them to add this a Feature request. I guess atleast by Version 7 or later versions, they should come up with some thing which facilitates this.
