profiled vs non-profiled conversions
suj
Hi,
Can anybody throw some light on profiled vs non-profiled conversions? Is the print/color quality better with profiled conversions? We have a few recommended tasks from interwoven, most of them have color convertion with ICC profiles using SWOP (Coated), 20% ICM. I could find SWOP (Coated).icm in my repository, but not sure if this is the same as above. if not, where can I get this profile? We currently have all the conversion tasks with 'Use ICC profiles' unchecked.
One of the recommended task which uses ICC profile is given below.
This task which will be used for creating a 72 dpi JPEG image, for use on the web.
1) Flattener –.
2) Color Converter –
Color Converter General Tab
Use ICC Profiles – On
If profiled conversion fails, use non-profiled conversion – On
Destination Color Space – RGB
Non-Profiled Conversion Tab
Color Converter General Tab
Use this profile – SWOP (Coated), 20% ICM
Only if embedded profile is absent – On
Destination Profile – sRGB Color Space Profile.icm
Rendering Intent – Read from Profile
3) Image Size – size the image to be 65 pixels wide.
Resampling Type – Bicubic, Fit to Box
Width – xx pixels
Height – xx pixels
Resolution – 72 pixels/inch
Constrain Proportions – On
4) JPEG Encoder – output as a JPEG image
JPEG Compression Quality – 85

Color conversions are a vast subject. The best answer is whatever looks best in your particular circumstance.
Roughly, a profile maps from a device dependent colorspace to a device independent one (i.e., making sure that you know exactly what I mean by "red"). The idea is that you need one to specify the input and one to specify the output. If the inut file already has a source profile you should in almost all circumstances use it.
Things get a bit tricky when talking about previews of CMYK images because the preview is, of course, RGB and therefore after a profiled conversion to CMYK, MediaBin does a non-profiled conversion to RGB.
Bottom line, experiment!
Cheers,
