Managing an active & archive db

Don't know if this is a typical setup or not, but we have two worksite databases, one for active matters, one for archived matters.

Because the routine is to import flat text files into each, and there is no synergy between the two, through the course of normal operations a matter's status changes from opened, to closed, or from closed to open. Now of course we have the same matter in both databases. Not an ideal situation.

Including matter status, descriptions could change, as well as the client's name, and in addition to that matters can be transferred from one client to another.

Now I'm aware of DocAuto and that they have some tools to manage this, is that correct? Are there any other options, such as managing the data at the SQL level with maintenance scripts? Is that a real and viable option?

What are others doing?
