Changing String List from multiple to single select

We have a custom metadata field that we have created incorrectly as being able to select multiple values. It appears that once the metadata value is created, this field is grayed out inside the Windows client and web client.

We haven't loaded any real assets other than test ones, so removing the field and creating a new one isn't a big deal. Is there a way around this in the future once we have a lot of assets added?

I can understand switching from multiple to single values and what problems that might cause on the database backend, but I didn't see anywhere inside the MetaDataCatalog table where this setting was even indicated.

There is no "official" way to fix this, but there are certainly database queries that would get what you wanted. However, I would deal with this through support in which case you could be given a highly tailored solution for the particular case.
