Category names - What types and categories have you used? Looking for inspiration

I'm trying to rethink how I organize categories and data types. I'd like to know what others have done. Are your data types in one category or multiple categories. Are they organized by Language, page vs. component, local vs. global etc. A category for each site etc.. How are they grouped and why?

Currently the data-types I've created are so site specific that mostly they are unique to a branch and application. As such, I've defined site specific data-type categories to accommodate the unique data and presentation requirements for each application.

There is some redundancy in doing it this way and I'd like to define and reuse the same data-types accross sites. The wrinkle local language FormsPublisher interfaces like Japanese! Not sure if there is a way to make data-types generic enough to use accross branches? Looking for information so any you all can provide would be helpful.
