Problems viewing the versions of a DCR

Hi,
TS 6.7.1, Win 2003 ES SP1

We have multiple branches. From branch A say when i view the versions of a DCR(by clicking on the version name), i can view all the version without any problem.

But on branch B when i click on the version name, im getting the following error.

Im not sure, why it is searching from some edition? There are no editions created. In the earlier branch also there are no edition and in the staging there is no datacapture.cfg, but i can view the versions there.

Can anybody suggest me what could be the possible cause.

DCRs were not designed to be submitted to staging (it's only the generated files that should be submitted to staging) and hence sometimes you may not be able to preview the DCR from STAGING or EDITION .

As of, I believe, 5.5.2 - all submit operations create what are called "hidden" editions - which is what you see if you look at the path provided in the original post (emphasis added):

//{servername}/{branchs}/EDITION/#2201/templatedata/{category}/{datatype}/datacapture.cfg

However, the statement about the DCT not being automatically submitted with the DCR is a good one - because if you never submit the DCT, you aren't doing a good job of versioning important assets.

What do you mean by "not designed to be submitted"?
Where did you get this?
This is wrong - or at least backwards. DCRs represent the source of the generated pages - and thus it is more important to version / submit the DCRs than it is to version / submit the generated files - but the general practice is to version / submit both - one representing the source, the other representing the assets which actually get deployed to your production servers.

As noted above - hidden editions are created whenever you perform a submit operation.
Was this backing store copied from an older TS server?
Were the branches migrated to the 6.7.1 store from an older backing store?
Also - are you sure you're attempting the same operation on both branches - the error message seems (I could be misreading this) to indicate that there was an attempt to do an Edit DCR:

The fact that you aren't submitting your DCT to staging sounds like you aren't properly using the software and might want to re-think your processes.
The fact that you aren't using named editions is also a questionable practice that you might want to re-think - especially if you ever need to migrate the content in the branches (since iwmigrate operates on named editions)

This is a newly created store with newly created branches and not migrated ones and im attempting the same operation in both the branches. clickin on the version name.

Yes everything should be versioned. Is it possible that DCT was submitted until quite later ? Paste this into your TS path in the GUI and tell me what you see:

//dfait-maeci/main/internet-internet/ci-ci/ci-ci/EDITION/#456/templatedata/pages-pages/generic-generique

Also, did someone change folder names ? That may have caused this issue.

I went to .../EDITION/#12 and saw all the files, not just what was submitted.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I pasted that path into the browser I see only the "data" folder. The /presentation folder or the datacapture.cfg file are not present there. When I click on the /data folder I see a lot of DCRs in there.

Then what happened is no-one submitted the DCT (nor the PT) until well after the DCRs were submitted. So TS has no reference how to render the DCR to do a compare.

Do the tabs show up ? It should be able to show you the DCR in Source mode.

we have a similar problem . We are able to view the DCR in read only mode when we click on version number of previous versions of DCRs . but the 'Preview' is disabled. So we are not able to preview the DCR using PT .How to enable the 'Preview' button ??

I do not think you can. I also think it's a correct restriction but that's debatable (for the preview anyway)

The easiest way to preview DCR version is perhaps submit the current one, revert to desired
older Version, preview and then "Get Latest" with the override thus restoring current DCR

If that's a Business requirement you should probably code for it, it's not that big of a deal.

Make custom menu item or perhaps a WF. Something like "Pick DCR, show Versions, pick Version,
generate, show/redirect to resulting Page"

You might consider creating a temporary additional workarea into which you can retrieve / revert the specific file to the specific revision - without disrupting any work being done in a / the primary workarea. Once it's in a workarea you'll be able to do previews.
