Perl Date Format

Hi All,

Quick Assistance Needed Please! I have following format currently returned 01/23/2007. I need to have format in 01/23/07. I am attaching my code for reference. Thank you.

You can do that using rindex(...) function available in perl for the year part only.

Would advice you to read some perl books or google a bit will solve the problem much quickly.

You can also use Date::Manip to parse and reformat a date:
http://search.cpan.org/~sbeck/DateManip-5.44/Manip.pod

It is a bit heavyweight for what you need, but it provides a lot more flexibility. With the "UnixDate" function, a format such as this should give the desired format:
%m/%d/%y

Since you are only hacking off the first two digits of the year, couldn't you just use regex to do a search replace and remove the extra digits?


my $stuff = "01/27/2007";
$stuff =~ s/(\d\d\/\d\d\/)\d\d(\d\d)//  ;
print $1.$2;

You've already received sufficient answers on ways to do this, however I would pose the question: Why?

Two-digit years are notoriously bad (I assume you're old enough to remember the Y2K issue).

Going further - the best format to use is the universal date format of YYYY-MM-DD, which besides not causing confusion between Americans (MM/DD/YYYY) and Europeans (DD/MM/YYYY) also sorts chronologically and lexically at the same time.
