WebServices Java: MBException: Error in CMBVariant

Hi. I am getting this error:

Server was unable to process request. ---> MBException: Error in CMBVariant:perator MB:ataValuePtr(). Type of the Variant, 20, is invalid for this method. (0x80040500)

Which is caused by this code:

mdata.setMID(dbAttributes.getMid());
Object valueFromDB=dbAttributes.getValue();
mdata.setMValue(valueFromDB);

}
The values are set in a code like this:

attributes[1]=new AttributeValuePair("{B55CF1EE-777C-402F-95EC-07C630476123} ",Long.valueOf(rs.getLong(1)), "Item ID");

When I set STRINGS only - the code works. As soon as it comes across any object which is not a String, it gives me the error above.
Can you please let me know what is the problem?

For certain metadata types, such as Boolean and Value Lists (IntegerChoice), the values returned with a GetAsset call cannot be used when editing the metadata.

The metadata list returned from a GetAsset call is "display ready"....i.e. Booleans which are either 0 or 1 are displayed as True\False or Yes\No and Value Lists are returned as their display strings not their backing values ( e.g. if "Color" were a value list that looked like 0=Red, 1=Blue, 2=Green....then "Red" would be returned to display but 0 is the true value).

The reason for this is to avoid adding overhead to methods that would typically be used for display purposes...i.e. without the conversion, the client app would have to make an additional call to the web service to get the metdata's format and then do the conversion client-side before displaying the metadata list.

For editing metadata, you will need to get the metadata's format specification so that you can do the mapping before passing the value in. The format object also contains other formatting information to help in client-side validation of the metadata values....e.g. Regular Expressions, min\max values. You can access the format object either by calling GetMetadata for a specific metadata field or GetEditableMetadata to get the entire list of editable metadata.
