Unrealistic customer requirement?

Against my advice and that of others to whom they pay good money, my customer has requested that a custom tool that I've built collect a set of files in a workarea based on their extended attributes. They also do not have TeamSite Search licensed. So, that said, the only way (that I see) to do this is to grab each file in the workarea (there are thousands in this case) and run "iwextattr -g" on them. The (lack of) performance of this app will prove my point but is there a better way of doing this that is more efficient that some of the DevNet brainiacs might know of?

Been there, done that. I implemented the same thing in 5.5.2. At the time, not much of a choice of options. Brute force method was the way I did it. FTI, took about a half hour for a 18K DCR list on a sizable Sun box.

I assume DataDeploy/DAS is not an option.

I had thought of that and if I had the benefit of being the one who planned their system *AND* (this is the more important part) if that requirement had been brought to mind at that time, I would have done it like that. Or, at least store it in a local XML file.

Y'know, I've run this script to traverse all workarea files a dozen or so times and I think twice, it actually finished before timing out! I was impressed by that but then this box has 8 processors (yes, 8) and 4GB of memory. Seems light on the memory for that CPU power but hey. So, I'm not complaining about the hardware but I've warned them and warned them.

I think that the least I can do -- if they insist on this methodology -- is to do AJAX calls so that it tells the user how many files it has processed so that (1) the user is "entertained" during this stupid process and (2) the user doesn't think the thing crapped out while it was chugging.

hehe Dave...lucky with a good spec machine but to touch the file system and find the search result is gonna slog today or tomorrow.

I was just thinkin of actual prodcution env when multiple users running simultaneous search queries....ooooz..users will be pulling their hair Smiley Wink

I see your point but this tool will really only be run once every couple of months or so. Not often at all. Still, I'm cringing as I put this thing together for them, knowing how poorly it's designed.

Hi Dave,

You don't need a separate license for TeamSite Search. It is bundled in with TeamSite after TeamSite 6.5. It requires a separate install, but no license key. I am not sure if this will help you in this instance, but I thought the clarification might help.
