Controlling visivility of menu items

Hi, I've implemented a few customisations using ui_custom.xml and they are working a treat.

However they are currently available to ALL Teamsite users. I'm not interested in controlling it by role, but would like to hide the menus from certain work areas (or more importantly only make it available to certain work areas).

We've put some code into the actual menu scripts to detect the work area and display an error if it's the wrong one, but would be much better to hide from those inappropriate work areas altogether.

I've looked through the forums and developer guides and can't find a solution I'm afraid.

Any ideas?

I've looked into it too, for various versions. Up to and including 6.5 what you've done is the only (supported) way.
I have not tried 6.7 code, from documentation however it looks like there are no changes in that respect
