PDF ingestion fails after upgrade to Acrobat Reader 8.1
System
Hello all,
I opened a case with support, but just in case someone else ran into this I'm posting a message here.
Environment: MediaBin 4.5.3, Windows 2003, SQLServer 2000
We upgraded Acrobat Reader to version 8.1.0 (from 6.0) on one of our MediaBin servers because some recent PDF files were not being ingested correctly, and from that moment on when we try to insert a PDF file the job fails with the following error:
Warning: Adobe Acrobat not found. Page images are unavailable
Warning: Helping app not found. Page images are unavailable.
Exception in Primitive {1E885AE1}! Reason = Problem in RIP., Message = PDFDecoder: Error ripping page content
Word and Excel files still get ingested correctly, so it's not BlackIce going completely "belly up".
We can open PDF files when on the server, with the account that runs the MediaBin service.
We can even drag and drop PDF files on the metafile printer icon, and files are generated at the right place.
Please advise what to do…
Thanks,

The problem has to do with the software where the server figured out the specifics of your Acrobat installation. Please let us know what keys exist in the registry under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader
It is possible that this configuration will require a patch. Unfortunately with each release Adobe changes just enough of their Acrobat settings to require tweaking. However I have forwarded this thread to our local expert.
Cheers,

MediaBin 4.5.3 supports Acrobat 6 and 7, but not 8. One short-term solution is to uninstall Acrobat 8, and reinstall Acrobat 7. There is no particular disadvantage of using Acrobat 7. Another, better solution is to upgrade to MediaBin 4.6 which supports Acrobat 6, 7, and 8.
