Date::Manip unable to determine TimeZone

In porting a workflow from Solaris to Linux, I'm getting an error with Date::Manip...specifically being "unable to determine TimeZone".

Looking it up, I see how I probably could set it with an environment variable...but then I'd have to change it twice a year for daylight savings time. (Not cool.) I could possibly parse it out of the `date` system command...but supposedly that's what Date::Manip is supposed to be doing in the first place. I also could try writing my own daylight routine, but that would be even worse than changing it twice a year since who knows when the federal government will change the DST rules again?

What OS are you working on ? It *should* be able to figure that out.

Linux, specifically:

What does Federal Government in general and DST rules in particular have to Time Zones?!

Congress about 2 years ago changed the date when DST took effect. It had been in early April, this year it was early March. Patches were flying around the internet to take care of this issue (including for TS and OD).

Mike, I am surprised you have an issue since the date command is reporting your correct TZ.

My instance of Linux on VMWARE is on UTC, so it is not an issue.

I will look into the date::manip as well.

Andy, please. I beleive I deserved *presumption of competence*. I certainly know about DST changes, after all my signature
shows TS 6.5 SP3 for a reason. Note however that neither Congress nor British Queen changed Time Zones.

Mine for example was EST, is EST and if I can hazard a guess will be EST for some time to come. Time in the Zone may change
because of DST rules and/or some regional peculiarities ( some Countries have local 30 mins shifts, etc...). The reason why
Date::Manip works in your environment and not Mike's is quite possibly 'TZ' Environment variable that he either did not
set or TS failed to propagate to whatever (forked) environment he's using (CGI, Menu and whatnot). Tiny code fragment I've posted
forces Time Zone for Date::Manip Class regardless of TZ Environment variable ( or lack thereof )

OK, no offense intended.

Mike had mentioned that he might write his own TZ interpreter. Which certainly would be affected by congress changing the date that DST takes place. Not the timezone itself, however the date that CST goes to CDT.

Mike, here are the instructions for setting the TZ in Linux:

Setting your timezone

The timezone under Linux is set by a symbolic link from /etc/localtime to a file in the /usr/share/zoneinfo directory that corresponds with what timezone you are in. To set this link, type:

ln -sf ../usr/share/zoneinfo/your/zone /etc/localtime

Replace your/zone with something like Australia/NSW or Australia/Perth. Have a look in the directories under /usr/share/zoneinfo to see what timezones are available.

Mike, interestingly enough, my system always displays UTC unless I explicitly set TZ=Americas/Phoenix. I have tried /usr/sbin/timeconfig as well as /etc/localtime

As I continued debugging the migration of my script, I found another problem...turns out that the workflow did not have the path set right, so Date::Manip couldn't run the `date` command to determine the time zone. (Couldn't run some other things, like `cat`, which meant that OpenDeploy couldn't run either...)

I am using windows Server 2003 as Operating System on my server machine and the time zone is set to india currently.
I am facing some problem in case of document history.

Problem Description:

Suppose current machine time is 9:57 AM. I checked Out a document, when i checked out the document one entry will goes in DOCHISTORY table alongwith the activity code.But when i look in the table DOCHISTORY it shows me time is 4:26 AM in that entry.

I am not getting the problem.

Revert me asap.

It looks like you're posting in the wrong thread in the wrong forum ... I don't believe that WorkSite uses Perl (I could be wrong, I've never worked with that product) - so posting in a thread about Perl's Date::Manip module doesn't make much sense.

I suggest you re-post your question in either the WorkSite MP or WorkSite forum(s)
