MIgration from AIX to windows

HI, One of our client wants to migrate from their current version of AIX 5.5 to Windows 6.5 and has requested information form us. I feel direct backing store conversion is NOT supported as the platforms are different and we will have to manually recreate the entire system at windows version end.

If anyone has gone through this before can you please advice?

if not restoring the entire backing store, are ther any scripts that could be written to migrate WA , user security settings etc? Something like EA's script which works like...extracting information from AIX and reapplying the same on Windows end etc...

You are correct in that there is no formal method for migrating from a Unix system to a Windows system (perhaps they'd be interested in going to Linux instead? though I haven't done that migration, and I've seen one report of problem - it should be easier).

The informal method involves writing a bunch of scripts to extract what you want from the source server and transfer it to the target server

On a whole - depending on what you are trying to do - it can either be relatively easy or weeks, if not months, of frustrating work.

But the scenario is reverse....We are migrating from Unix to windows (I hate to say that)...
Is it possible to have a tape backup from the Unix TS server and restore it back to the win2k server?

Are you talking a tape backup of what ? There is technology to read a Unix Tar file on Windows. So yes you can do that.

Will the data be any good once you move it ? That is a much bigger question. Are you asking if you can tar up the Unix iw-store and copy it to Windows ? If that were to work, I would go play the lottery because you hit a Million to One shot. :-)

If you wanted to validate if this is possible, you could create a new store on your UNIX server:
iwstoreadm -a new-store

Then, create a few fbranches/workareas/folders/files and versions.

then, unmount the store:
iwstoreadm -d new-store

Then tar up the store that was created (and perhaps GZIP), or just FTP the files over. I think either would work for the test.

Mount the store on the Windows server.

Attempt to use the store on the Windows server.

Since Interwoven declares that this is not possible, you should probably do a lot of testing, if it works at all. Perhaps you could run some backing store administration tools like iwfsshrink and iwfsck to help validate the new store.

The answers thus far are with respect to technically retrieving something created on Unix onto a Windows box - they have nothing to do with the technical feasibility of what you are asking though (IMO).
