Teamsite 6.7.1 on other Linux? Ubuntu?

Ok, my personal experience with Linux is limited, very limited... especially in the area of understanding what all the different distro are good for, and how much they really differ.

I was wondering, if I install let's say a Ubuntu Linux on a personal PC (AMD 32-bit cpu), can I hope that TS 6.7.1 would run on that? Or is RedHat an absolute pre-req?

This is for DEV, not production.

6.7.1 on Ubuntu will not work IMHO. I tried SUSE with no luck.
There are too many low-level dependencies, and the libraries on the various linux flavors are bundled differently.

But of course if you are successful using whatever hacks you do - I'm sure everyone would love to hear the war stories.

We are doing exactly what you are trying to do in our development/sandbox, but not using Ubuntu. Is there a reason not to use Red Hat?

Ubuntu is more of a desktop replacement distribution with heavy work done on the user interface, it is not really targeted towards servers.

We just have a Red Hat server installation without X windows even being installed. It is running inside vmware on a 2 cpu, 2 GB ram host compaq server. We haven't seen any issues, it runs better in this configuration then it does on Windows Smiley Happy

fyi - if you don't want to pay for RHEL, you can get Oracle's "unbreakable" linux - which is repackaged RedHat Enterprise .. and free

From my side, it was just plain curiosity... I'm feeling an urge this week to try out Linux on the home desktop (for the first time), and Ubuntu came to mind as a much-in-the-news, seems-popular, could-be-good-place-to-start distribution, since the distro variety is not my cup of tea.

From there on, I started day-dreaming about some home-experiment and home-study with Teamsite. The company has an unlimited CPU contract.

"unlimited CPU" - meaning unlimited TS licenses - or unlimited number of CPUs on a licensed TS server (i.e. a single server with 2, 4, 8, ... CPUs)?

I installed it on a RHEL clone - X/OS, no issues whatsoever, but there are a few more clones, they are free... if the price was your concern....

Your day dreaming may cost you!
If you personally do not have a Teamsite license, and you install it on a personal computer at home, you are basically committing software piracy. I think you will be bound by California piracy laws which are very stringent.

thanks for your concerns re: my legal exposure ;-) I'll make sure to clear whatever I end up doing with our iwov account manager.

@ghoti: unlimited TS licenses. Our only contract limit is # of named users AFAIK.

I'm mostly happy to just focus on the technical side of the question at the moment - thanks for the suggestions (RH*L & clones)...
