modify log files without stopping the server

I want to clean up some log files, such as iwtrace.log, on the production server without stopping the server.

Are there any software tools out there that can help with this?

There are a couple logs that you cannot rotate live. Most can. Of course, those are the biggest. There is a FR for live rotating of logs, or something like a iwreset -rotate_logs, so the apps would close the files.

There is no way to accomplish this without shutting down the TS server.

Do you want to rotate them (to preserve the old logs) or just zero-them out to reclaim space?

Are you on Windows or Unix?

On Windows I think your stuck.

On Unix you can copy the file first (if desired) and then either:

Either may work, sometimes though you end up with a file of the same size filled with null characters (which weighs more, 20 pounds of feathers or a 20 pound bowling ball?).As nipper mentioned - there's a FR for this - which has been requested for many many years now - maybe one of these days they'll actually give it to us ...

As I don't currently have access to a Solaris box running TS right now - I cannot verify that the above is still accurate - but I have been able to use one or the other of the methods I posted with success in the past ... I'd still rather have the functionality built in to the product though.

Thanks for pointing out the KB article. The script in it could be useful.

Opening a log file in notepad, deleting everything, then saving, as the article suggested, didn't work for me. The save operation was not allowed.

However, saving an empty file to replace the existing log file worked for me. I could do this without restrictions on any of the log files.
