DD appears to ignore the "check-schema" instruction?

OD 6.1.0 Windows 2003

Problem: I have a DD configuration defined and my schema changed. So, I made the appropriate changes to the configuration and re-ran the thing, specifying "real-update='yes'". I have a record to be updated but because I changed the schema, DD tries to delete and then reinsert the record regardless, which is a huge problem because of foreign keys and other constraints. I've specified "check-schema" to be 'no', even though I understand that to be the default setting and it still behaves this way. According to the documentation, this should cause it to ignore the schema, no?

I'm sure others have had this issue but my search on DevNet has turned up some good information but not the golden egg, I'm afraid.
