SysAdmin Complaints about UVFS on Linux

In preparing the TeamSite installation on Linux, my sysadmin is pushing back on the installation of uvfs. Here's what he said:

"The UVFS module was a shock to me. UVFS requires the use of a kernel module that does not come with RedHat Enterprise Linux(RHEL) version 4. This is large complication for us as it will prevent us from being able to patch the O/S and definitely cause support complications from our O/S vendor if there are any kernel problems whatsoever."

Has anybody else encountered similar pushback, and were they able to resolve it?

Not sure I understand the pushback. What kernel module are they talking about? You need to build the uvfs module on your local system against your kernel sources, but that should be it. We have continued to apply normal linux package updates without having to go back and touch uvfs.

I'm not sure what the issue is either; I'm thinking it may be more of a misunderstanding than anything.

I can understand the frustration. Solaris also requires a kernel module and generally sysadmins do not like anything installed on a box unless:
o it can be constrained to one directory
o it does not touch any system files
o it does not require root

TeamSite tends to fail those three tests, although the root requirement has lessoned recently. Either way, tell the sysadmins to get over it. There is not much that can be done.
