MediaBin search technology
Bill Klish
I had a question come up today with a customer regarding the actual technology behind the scenes performing the search indexing in the mediabin repository. Is it Verify like with TeamSite or something else.
Also, are synonyms checked during the search, or is it just by actual words?

It doesnt have any search engine. Its all SQL search. It does not do a synonym search.

So I assume wild card search would work, but I need to have good keyword metadata defined to handle looking for more advanced searches.

I am not totally sure about the wildcard search. You can try it out at

Metadata is the key for your searche to be effective. The client that I am at currently is having major issues finding assets via search because the metadata is not clean or just doesnt make any sense for a particular asset.
Your search is only as good as your metadata.

The simple answer is that MediaBin leverages its underlying database be it SQL or Oracle for its search. That being said, the specifics are somwewhat version dependent.
MediaBin provides a UI to craft a query and does not expose the ability to send SQL or anything approaching that to the database. Instead wild cards are exposed via operators like "starts with" and "contains".
As of MediaBin 4.5.3 for SQL Server and as of MediaBin 4.6 (in beta) for Oracle, MediaBin exposes a "quick search" that enables full-text indexing. Again it is leveraging the underlying capabilities of the databases instead of using a third party tool.
Hope that helps,
