Is it required to run OpenDeploy under root? OpenDeploy does not run on any port lower then 1024 but does it required to be root has a receiver?

OpenDeploy receiver can be configured to be run as non-root. However you will need root priviledges to do the initial install/configuration.
One of the reasons why OD receiver is required to be run as root is it needs to do "root-type" functions like create/delete files, change owner, group, permissions, etc.
If you configure it with proper permissions and startup scripts you can run it as non-root.

This is a common question/concern for a lot of companies.
Because the documentation states that it must run as Root, we have had many meetings to determine if we want to use OD in our unix environment at all. Even though it can run as non-root, since the documentation states it needs to run as root, we're concerned that if we do run it as user-x that we will not be running in a supported configuration. That worries our support staff.
Maybe Interwoven can change the OD documentation to specify that the account it runs under needs specific rights/privs and to which files/folders it needs to access. (PLEASE)

OpenDeploy can be safely run as non-root. However, by running as non-root you lose the ablility to fire off DNR scripts as other users and applying user/group/perm attributes on deployed files/dirs.
We're working on making this automatic; i.e., you'll be able to easily configure OD to run as either root or non-root.
In the meantime, you should first install OD as the root user. Then, there are files and dirs which you need to change permissions on in order to run as non-root. These are mostly the dirs in which OD creates and updates logs and other OD-specific system files. The quick approach is change everything recursively under the <od-home> directory to non-root readable/writable.
