Retaining file versions

Hi All,

I wanted to know if there is a way to retain the versions of a file when moving the file to a new location.

I am moving a file from one folder to the other folder in the same branch but the operation gets rid of the version history.

How exactly are you moving it? Are you moving it by using an OS "mv" or "move" command?

I am going to the File Menu and then move in CCPro Content tab.

What SP? I am also on 6.5 but on Windows and when I move a file from one directory to another, the file history and versions are retained.

Yeah, me too.

So, before you copy a file from DIR1 to DIR2, you click on PROPERTIES and then VERSIONS and you see several or more version there, right? Then, you select MOVE from the FILE drop down list and instruct TS to move the file from DIR1 to DIR2. After the file is moved to DIR2, you hit PROPERTIES and then VERSIONS and just the one version is there??

But I am using File > Versions rather than Properties > versions. I assume they should both work the same way.

I can understand that when I am copying a file to a new location, then since its a new file in that new location, it should show me 0+ version, but if I am moving a file then it should show me all the versions as I did not create a new file and just moved it to a new location.

Yeah, that's the same screen.

Hey, maybe that's a bug on the Solaris version of 6.5 SP2. I'd try contacting support about this -- it's such an important yet simple function.

Not I but I'm curious what happens if I do a COPY rather than MOVE? If that works, then I suppose the worst that could come of this is that you'll rewrite the MOVE command to do a COPY, verify the COPY and then DELETE the source.

i am on w2k3 TS 6.7.1 and i still can see versions of a file after moving it to new folder using either the file menu or file properties...

howver, i noticed that, before moving the file, it has 8 versions, and after moving it, it shows 1 to 8 version with the old location path at the bottom and the top version is the newest version and it is numbered 0+ with the new path/location ...
maybe that info is there but invisible to you because of "something" (solaris bug, configuration...)

Just a guess but maybe it's showing the "old" path because that's how it's mapped to the staging area?

It's possible that you won't see the version information until you submit the file in its new location. Until you do the submit - it's just version 0+.

I've just done some major renaming of files in a directory via a script that used iwcp and all the renamed files maintained their version information -- and this was on TS6.5SP3 on Solaris.
