Information about backup procedure

Hi,

Could you please give some ideas about best backup procedure(Env: windows 2003 SP1, TS SP2)?



1. Team Site server - 
    a) How people are taking the entire system backup? any tools like netbackup of windows 2003.
    b) Do we need to freeze the server to take entire system backup?
    c) Did anyone test the restore process? Particularly about logical Y drive.
    d) Is there any difference to restore on the same mechine or different mechine?
2. Content Store (iw-store) -  iwfreeze &     iwmigrate
    I heared that many people have issues with iwmigrate. What is the best 
way to backup just iw-store. If I migrate to another mechine or location and 
put it back, will it work without giving any trouble?

Please give your ideas about handling the above issues. I appreciate your help.

Yes backups are a good idea. You should try them.

We do complete backups of content store. IT uses a tool, but I do not know what it is. Currently it does not have the ability to run an app (like a freeze), so I have a script that runs at night, does a freeze, then copies the backing store to another location. Both the content store and the copy are backed up.

We do NOT backup the Y drive.

I have restored the backups, no problem. Just time consuming. Changing machines is not a huge issue depending. If you are using domain users, then there should not be an issue, if you are not then idmap may be required.

Andy, on similar grounds my question is, if we do the iwmigrate on one machine(1) and copy the stores which are migrated as a result of iwmigrate on to another machine(2), it would work.

My question is when we want to do incremental migration can we do it directly on the second machine(2) provided we get the content from intial stores which weren't migrated and have been updated regularly with content (machine(1) wouldnt be in picture at all).

Really appreciate your advice on this.

Should that work ? Yea. Is it likely that anyone has ever tried it ? Not that I know of.

I am not a fan of trying to use iwmigrate in to keep 2 disparate repositories in sync. It was never made for that and, IMHO, is ill suited for that task. iwmigrate is not a light weight application or an app that can run solely in a scripted mode, like a backup should.

If you want to do something like that, I would use a combination of workflow and Opendeploy get the job done. During the WF, build up a list of daily file changes, and then at night OD runs and moves the files from one server to another. This does not affect the source or destination during normal hours, but the downside is that daily changes are lumped into 1 change (if a file is submitted multiple times in the day, it should once in the destination). You could deploy in the WF and not have that if that is truly a requirement. There would need to be a DNR to submit the changes that are imported into the destination.
