What is the recommended Exception and Error handling procedures?

For example, when a user logs onto MediaBin, I trap the String if (connectionResponse == 'User successfully connected to MediaBin Server on server_name.') etc....... Not a very smart way of doing it.

The same can be said for handling error such as putting an asset into a Mbin container that already has an asset, etc... I would love to trap for an error [.number] or hex rather than a string in the MBException.Message.
