How to get the branch path in workflow.

I need to get the branch path as the first step of the workflow. This is before the user dialog is even presented. I need to do this first thing to parse it to then determine what directory to read a supplemental XML file to read. this supplemental file is used to pre-populate the dialog.
Example:
branch structure is:
Default/Application/Region

sample:
Application are: Tim, Mike, Bob.
Regions are: Test,Prod

The user is under the workarea in .../default/Tim/Test and starts a job.
I need to get the branch and parse it to get "Tim". then use that value to get the correct Supplemental XML file. I have figured out how to buld the correct path to this file. I just can't figure out how to get the branch and parse it.

You can use iw_branch value that is passed to workflow and use it to get the configuration values.
