Web Client (4.6) - Revisions limited to Users with Change access - Why?
Jase_Norwich_UK
Hi,
We have a requirement to allow access to the previous versions of an asset to all users of our web client, but we don't want to give everyone Change permissions.
It's easy to remove the "CanChange" check on the page to allow the History tab to be displayed. However the metadata permissions for "Current Revision" cannot be changed which means that the users (with Change privilege) cannot search for assets with previous versions.
I have 2 questions:
1. Although it's easy to change the page to display the History tab, I can't think of any problems that this would introduce - are there any?
2. The permissions on the "Current Revision" metadata item are unchangeable - is it possible to amend the permissions to allow people search for assets with multiple revisions and would this cause problems?
We shy away from making too many changes to the ASP pages for mantainability reasons but this one seems like an easy win for us with minimum admin overhead.
Thanks In advance.

Users without Change permissions don't have access to revisions. This is enforced by MBServer. Therefore, users would not be able, for example, to view the 512x512 preview of a revision since they have no access to its metadata (the default thumbnails are stored as metadata). I believe you would need a server-side customization to allow users without change permissions to have access to revisions.

After a bit more testing, the problem I encountered when making the change to allow users without CHANGE permissions to get access to the HISTORY tab, seems to be related to new code that has yet to be released.
Therefore, that ASP change seems to work ok based on the testing I've done. MBServer DOES permit users with LIST permissions to see asset revisions. The restriction found in the web client is isolated to the ASP code only and will be removed for the next release (4.7).
