Profile Dialogs for pdf's

Hey All,

I have recently been doing some work on capturing incomplete document profiles and prompting users to complete necessary fields. This is for documents which have been imported into Desksite.

We are currently using Desksite version 8.0 on Clients and version 6 (?) on the Server.

So far I have been working with Microsoft Office documents and hooking into the document events in the Microsoft Office Templates, to ascertain when a document is opened and to begin the process of checking whether the user needs to amend the profile. This has all been going well so far.

In parallel I have been asked to ascertain if the same can be done for pdf documents, i.e. when a pdf is opened in acrobat reader can I check the document profile and prompt the user to amend it if necessary.

I have worked pretty extensively with the Desksite SDK previously, but am new to integrating with adobe acrobat reader.

Is anyone able to perhaps save me time and potentially a few headaches, by identifying for me, if the level of integration i mention above is possible with acrobat reader?

I also emailed the work site support team and they have replied with the following :

Unfortunately, the SDK does not support this because our Acrobat Integration does not fire any events the way Office Integration does.

I also ran this by the Acrobat Integration developer and this is their response:

"They could potentially write their own plug-in to intercept Acrobat's open event, then identify WorkSite documents and do whatever they need to do. But it would be a lot of work and, besides, to have their own Reader plug-in they have to pay Adobe to get a key for it."

This is pretty conclusive with what I have read in the Adobe SDK documentation, seems the only way to interface with acrobat readers events is to write a plug-in in C / C++ and then interrogate the Desksite SDK.

Just thought I'd share the response with you all in case you found it useful in future.
