FormAPI setValue into TinyMCE textarea

In the onItemChange code for one field I am using FormAPI setValue to write into a textarea in a different field. If the target textarea is defined like so:

<br /><br />the setValue works. If the textarea uses TinyMCE like so:<br /><br /><textarea external-editor="tinymce" external-editor-inline="f" external-editor-config="CCC" required="f" rows="3" cols="75" wrap="virtual"><br /><br />I get a message about editor_id not being defined. The error is raised in IWTinyMCEEditor.prototype.setValue. <br /><br />Can anyone offer suitable wisdom? Unfortunately, giving up my day job is not an option :-)
