Restoring backingstore from tape backup

One of our customer needs to restore one branch from the backingstore. We do have a tape backup. However, is there a document describing the procedure?

One branch or the complete store ?

backups are done by store, not by branch.

If that is not possible, then you *could* restore the backup to a second server and then use iwmigrate to move the specific branch.

Then that branch has to placed back in the production machine. Though I roughly know the rpocedure, I needed help with specific steps and commands.

Unless someone sits there and does it, it is hard to give you the exact commands. Roughly you will load the backingstore on another box. How to do that depends on what you have and how many stores you have purchased. You can load it to a new place and use iwstoreadm to register the store on the server. That works if you have multiple stores available. Otherwise you will overwrite the existing store, that will not require iwstoreadmin.

The commands to restore your folder are up to your sys admins.

moving the data from one server to another is well documented in the CLT manual under iwmigrate.

Yes, I agree that it's going to be a handson, and lengthy process. Some time ago, we did the same thing for the same customer.

Whatever route you choose, please don't ever overwrite backingstores. This is guaranteed to produce corruption.

The store only needs to be restored to a different box if you don't have sufficient space to have it on the existing box (albeit at a different path)

For instance - if you had /iw-store/default as your default store path you could restore the old store to /old-store/default.

You can then either make entries in your iw.cfg to access your store:

...
[iwserver]
...
store_directory_old=/old-store/default
store_comment_old=restored from backup temporarily
...

You probably need to follow this with an iwreset, possibly an iwreset -ui, and you may need to also do something like iwstoreadm -a old

Once the second store is visible - you can then follow the instructions for iwmigrate - note that it requires that the target store (/iw-store/default) be down (iwstoreadm -d default) to perform the migration.

If it's easier (or necessary) to put the store on another box - you'll either have to put it on another TeamSite server, or put it on a box and mount it similarly to the above so that it's as-if it was restored on /old-store -- after that, I believe the rest of the instructions remain pretty much the same.

Good point, this certainly did not sound the way I intended. I had meant that if they use a new install of TS (and not an existing backingstore) they can restore to that spot.
