Performance - Number of DCRs in a folder

Hello dear IW community,

I remember that once upon a time, there was a performance hit when opening a folder than contained more than 1000 DCRs (or thereabouts) I believe that it was the TeamSite 6.1 era.

Has that been proved? If so, has that number increased with subsequent releases of TeamSite? I've heard rumours, the new number around 5000 but again, just a rumour. Can anyone confirm or deny these numbers?

Yes it has drastically improved over the past, but yet there is no benchmarking on the numbers offically from IWOV, but we have more than 10,000 DCR's in a single folder and we don't have any performance issues. We are on 6.5 and Solaris.

There are two areas of performance to be concerned with - one is on the server side (scripts and/or processes that navigate through directories at the file system level) and the other is on the client side in the GUI (paging through all the entries in a list). The latter can become a significant problem if you have large directories and have opted to "View All" instead of paginate the contents in 100-entry chunks.

TeamSite itself improved most of the performance issues with respect to large directories around the 5.5.2 / 6.0 time frame by having the backing store divvy up directory contents such that there were never more than some number (255? 500?) in any backing store directory - regardless of how many mapped to a user-viewable directory.

I still favor the approach of trying to never have more than 500 entries in a single directory...
