New site creation - what is "Directory"?

(here we go - new to LiveSite product, sorry)

When creating a new site, I'm asked for "Directory". What is that used for? Do I put the path to our root directory on the web server (I hope not) or a folder below the web server root?

The doc reads "...enter the directory of the site's home page". It's required (can't be blank) and can't start with a slash so if it's "what subdirectory below 'webroot' how do you specify no-subdir?

in Livesite there are three different ways of Site resolution.

1) from url page path /mysite/[relative page path]

we extract the site from from the path

2. from host name http://mysite.com

we look at the server name to determine the site.

3. from root directory in url (this is virtual and not a physical path)

http://www.somehost.com/mysite

so what ever you provide for the directory name will be used to resolve
the site.
