DNR execution - symbolic link

We have a DNR script in a directory on target server which is a symbolic link. The DNR execution fails with the following error in the receiver log file-

ERROR: DNR Execution failed. where clause is not a directory = /www/wbqa/appserver

The appserver directory is actually a link which points to another location.

Is there a known issue with OD when specifying a symbolic link as the 'where' clause for DNR scripts?

Env: OD 5.5.1/solaris

We had not contacted support for this issue !

For testing we had linked our A Webserver and B Webserver.

So , when we were deploying files to A webserver , it tried to deploy files to B Webserver (Which was a Soft Link ).

So we came to this conclusion .

What type of servers are they ? Unix or NT ? What login were you using ?

If OD is running as local root or local admin, then it may not have write access to serverB since local root is "nobody" on another system.

But i have a simple question , if symbolic Link deployments would work , then there would be no need of OD Receiver (In General Case).

On server A : we would install the OD base Server .

Do a Deployment to some Path in Base Server A . There the soft link would be there for some path on Server B.

So finally the file would get deployed to Server B , without server B having any OD Receiver .

Pls let me know if i have missed out any thing.

You do not even need the sym links, just use NFS mounts.

Yes that will work and is a common way of using OD. Not super efficient, I would spend the extra $ to get the receiver on the destination. However I have implemented OD to servers that do not support OD, so this is done via NFS mount or shares.

Often then it is better to have OD run as a domain user which has permissions on all systems it will touch, rather than local admin/root.

In theory - yes, and as Nipper points out the same could be done with mount points - however, in practice most environments will not allow you to mount or symlink production side boxes on development side boxes and thus you must go through the network to transfer the files rather than relying on a symlink or mount point - and that's where OD makes sense.
