MediaBin doesnot support AVI files (DIVX codec)
ITSupport_MB
Hi All,
Does any body have any idea how to get MediaBin 4.6 to accept and play avi files which require divx codec for WMP. Currently not only they do not play, they also do not upload. I had uploaded them in 4.5.3 but there they did not play. When i migrated the system to 4.6 i started having problem with the upload as well. Normal AVI files get uploaded as they can be played in QuickTime and WMP. But the ones which require divx create problems.

Can you confirm that mpeg2 codecs are installed too on this MB-4.6 Box ?

The first step is to ensure that they will play via Windows Media PLayer. The DirectX framework which Media Player and MediaBin leverage is extensible and allows you to register different codecs. Extending to more formats is a matter of finding a DirectX "source filter" that supports the format you are interested in.
That being said, getting previews in MediaBin does rely on some properties of the filter and so it is not absolutely 100% that anything that will play in Media Player can get previews, but the exceptions are rare. The exceptions come from codecs that know how to play the video in a stream but cannot provide random access.

Hi,
as Lyman pointed out, once the correct codec is installed, the majority of the divx files are handled correctly, i.e. a preview is generated and the asset is treated as a multimedia file.
There might be some exceptions, which have to be investigated, though.

You need to install the DivX codec on the MediaBin server. I'm running it on my server and just verified that an AVI encoded in DivX will ingest and preview correctly in MediaBin.
