Very doubtful. You can change the label, which is seen by the users but not that internal name.

What is your use case ?

What you can do, if you have a finite number of choices (Name, NameA, NameB, NameC) is to have some extra hidden items and use formapi to move the data from one to another. Otherwise you may need to make a TPL that generates the XML you want.

You cannot change the item name using Form API. You may look into other very complex workarrounds but I do not think, there is a supported workarround to your issue.

The invisible item value need should not go to the database. I was thinking to change the name of the item so that the item name would be dynamically populated depending on the branch, where the DCT is opened.

There are a couple ways to solve this. You can use formapi to copy the proper value to another hidden value and DD that. You can also use a preprocessor in DD to read the appropriate field in the DCR to deploy. Neither should be very tough.

- Depending on the branch, either itemA or itemB should be visible to Authors and to Data Deploy to
populate the same column of certain Table.

If that's the case, you can use single identically named itemA (or

That would not work if you share DCTs. Most of my DCTs are really iw_includes to perl that generates the XML required. Still if you can set up DCTs like that, you can solve this problem.

I didn't think of the hidden item. I created the hidden item and assigned the value of item A or item B (depending on the value choose by user) and deployed the value of the hidden item to the d/b.
