user-created shortcut key--use in doc name and comments field of profile?

One of our users has created a shortcut key for a checkmark -- Alt + 1 (on keyboard, not numeric keypad). She wants to use this shortcut key to enter a checkmark into the name field and comments field of the document profile. Is this possible? If so, how? Some of the standard keyboard shortcuts, e.g., Alt + 21 for a section symbol - § - will work in these 2 fields, but few others will, including the user-created one that I experimented with. thanks
